As a result of trauma, your clients may be having difficulty finding words to describe their feelings. In order to help them communicate their feelings, you will teach them to connect their feelings with the situations or triggers that provoke them. You will also help them become aware of the thoughts and actions associated with their feelings.

Explain to your client that feelings have a function. Help them understand that feelings are information about them and about their environment.

To better assist your clients in this treatment, there are several ways in which you can help them learn how to identify feelings and their relevance:

  • Finding words to describe feelings.
  • Describing the physical experiences associated with particular emotions.
  • Learning that it is both important and acceptable to talk about feelings.
