Loved ones of Veterans with PTSD experience many challenges due to PTSD. Spouses may take greater responsibility for household tasks. Loved ones may feel a need to take care of the Veteran and their issues. Loved ones may become aware of things that trigger symptoms of PTSD. They may take an active role in trying to manage and lessen their effects.

“Caregiver burden” is a term that is sometimes used to describe the difficulties associated with caring for someone with a chronic illness, like PTSD. Loved ones of Veterans with PTSD can experience high levels of caregiver burden. This may include:

  • Financial strain
  • Emotional strain
  • Psychological distress
  • Negative mood
  • Anxiety
