Veterans have a high incidence of trauma exposure, and the universal adoption of trauma-informed care is integral to working with Veterans across health care settings. Health care workers may benefit from an enhanced understanding of trauma-related considerations when providing services to Veterans as a way to optimize health care utilization and outcomes.
This online course offers health care workers information about the benefits of adopting a trauma-informed approach to care. The authors summarize relevant literature, use case-based examples, and highlight information specific to Veterans. Recommendations for incorporating trauma-informed care into practice across a variety of health care settings are included.
Goals and Objectives
- Identify at least 3 types of traumatic experiences and recognize common reactions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Describe at least 3 potential health outcomes of trauma and understand how these outcomes can impact health care experiences
- Describe the broad concept of trauma-informed care and its application in providing services to Veterans
