Beyond Treatment Protocols: Personalizing Trauma-Informed Care for Veterans Author(s):

Lynette Adams, PhD and Elissa McCarthy, PhD

Description

Trauma exposure and posttraumatic mental health reactions are common among Veterans seeking mental health care. Because clinicians may not always know the full scope of a Veteran’s trauma history, applying trauma-informed care principles consistently across clinical interactions can help promote safety and support, and increase engagement, regardless of the focus of treatment.

This online course offers mental health providers an in-depth look at the value of considering the impacts of trauma, when providing evidence-based protocols or when delivering other services to Veterans. The authors describe the potential effects of past trauma on engagement in and response to care. Clinicians will learn how to identify and implement trauma-informed care practices, adopt specific supportive behaviors, and locate resources to enhance their trauma-informed care approach.

Goals and Objectives

  • Identify 3 types of traumatic experiences that may affect wellness, quality of life, and health care experiences
  • Discuss at least 3 resources to support trauma-informed care
  • Explain the broad concept of trauma-informed care and how it can be applied in mental health settings and care to Veterans
