Description
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), the evidence-based psychotherapy for PTSD most frequently delivered within the Veterans Health Administration, yields large reductions in primary PTSD outcomes. Corresponding gains in occupational, social, leisure, and sexual functioning, as well as in health-related concerns (including chronic pain) are also demonstrated. Despite CPT’s effectiveness, there is room for improvement in overall outcomes, including functioning and quality of life, in addition to patient engagement.
This online course describes the importance of balancing fidelity to the manualized treatment protocol and being flexible in administration to best meet the needs of a patient. The presenter discusses parameters for successful flexibility that do not dilute the efficacy of the protocol. Case formulation is discussed as an approach for more personalized care.
Goals and Objectives
- Describe the natural tension between fidelity and flexibility in administering manualized therapy for PTSD
- Discuss at least 2 parameters around manual flexibility in current practice
- Identify the use of a case formulation approach to personalize manualized therapy to best meet the patient’s needs
