Present-Centered Therapy Author(s):

M. Tracie Shea, PhD, Jennifer Joyce, PhD

Description

Trauma-focused psychotherapies are recommended for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guideline (VA/DoD CPG; 2023). Present-Centered Therapy (PCT) is a suggested treatment. If, following shared decision-making, Veterans decline trauma-focused treatment, Present-Centered Therapy is a solid, evidence-based, time-limited alternative.

This online course describes the origins and development of Present-Centered Therapy (PCT), as well as empirical support, session content, and procedures. The authors share case studies as examples of delivery. Clinical professionals can enhance their ability to offer effective PTSD treatments by learning the knowledge and skills needed to implement this psychotherapy.

Goals and Objectives

  • Explain the origins and development of Present-Centered Therapy
  • Describe empirical support for Present-Centered Therapy
  • Analyze at least 2 Present-Centered Therapy procedures and interventions, therapy session set up and suggested content
  • Examine at least 2 case examples and how to handle special issues that could arise.
