Supporting Clients Following Disasters or Mass Violence Author(s):

Patricia Watson, PhD

Description

Most disaster-focused research looks at the impact of such events, and attention is now moving toward how to work with those impacted by such crises. There is universality about what works across different types of disasters, which can inform providers about important actions to take in post-disaster settings.

This online course presents evidence-informed strategies and practical tools to support individuals affected by disaster events, including natural disasters, mass violence, and public health emergencies. The author provides guidance on recognizing common challenges, tailoring care to individual needs, modifying treatment approaches, fostering coping skills, and applying a framework to enhance safety, calming, connectedness, self-efficacy, and hope. There is an emphasis on the importance of effective communication to ensure compassionate and effective care during times of crisis.

Goals and Objectives

  • Identify at least 2 common challenges individuals may face after disaster events, such as anxiety, grief, financial instability, and changes in social support
  • Produce person-centered care by addressing specific stress reactions and modifying treatment approaches to suit the current context
  • Develop at least 2 strategies for discussing disaster events with clients, including validating their experiences and offering appropriate language prompts
  • Discuss existing treatment protocols to align with the unique challenges posed by disaster events
