Practical Applications of Trauma-Focused Psychotherapies Author(s):

Elissa McCarthy, PhD

Description

The 2017 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD recommends several trauma-focused psychotherapies as first-line treatment for PTSD: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).

This course describes CPT, EMDR and PE, explaining the essential components of each. A case vignette is used to illustrate the clinical delivery of each of these psychotherapies. In addition, key considerations for offering trauma-focused psychotherapy within a shared decision-making model are examined. Resources to support the delivery of and Veteran engagement in CPT, EMDR, and CPT are included.
