Description
The 2023 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD supports good tolerance and efficacy for trauma-focused therapies in those with comorbid history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Some helpful considerations and modifications may, however, optimize trauma-focused therapies for those with a history of mTBI.
This course will help clinicians understand the research that supports the use of evidence-based trauma-focused therapy for patients with PTSD who have experienced a TBI. The author reviews research about mTBI and discusses ways to integrate compensatory cognitive rehabilitation strategies into PTSD treatment. Information about SMART-CPT, a treatment that combines Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD with compensatory cognitive rehabilitation strategies, and other clinical applications are shared.
Goals and Objectives
- Cite the key findings of recent research about the intersection of mTBI and PTSD
- Discuss the research that supports the use of trauma-focused treatment for patients with co-occurring PTSD and mTBI
