Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD 2023: Medication & Other Biological Treatments Author(s):

Paul Holtzheimer, MD

Description

A workgroup from the Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense (DoD) completed a revision of the Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for the Management of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder in 2023. The VA/DoD guideline is based on a complete review of the traumatic stress research literature since the 2017 CPG and offers recommendations for providers who treat Veterans.

The course reviews the 2023 VA/DoD guideline, explaining the CPG development process. The author--who was a member of the VA/DoD CPG workgroup--explains the recommendations related to medications and other biological treatments, outlining how they have changed since 2017. Clinical implications for working with Veterans are discussed. This course includes resources to support clinical practice based upon the CPG recommendations.
