Medication and Other Biological Treatments for PTSD: Recommendations from the 2023 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline Author(s):

National Center for PTSD

Description

The Institute of Medicine Committee on Standards for Developing Trustworthy Clinical Practice Guidelines recommends that guidelines be reviewed and updated as research evolves. To that end, in 2023 the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense updated the Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder.

This online course describes the VA/DoD clinical practice guideline (CPG) recommendations for the treatment of PTSD using medications and non-pharmacological, biological treatments. It covers the CPG development process and helps providers understand how the guideline can be applied in practice. The course also offers information on National Center for PTSD resources related to the guideline, shared decision-making, and provider consultation. CPG Workgroup member Dr. Paul Holtzheimer served as the subject matter expert for this course.

Goals and Objectives

  • List the guideline’s key recommendations related to medications
  • Describe the guideline’s key recommendations related to other biological treatments
  • Describe at least 2 clinical implications of these recommendations
  • Explain at least 2 steps in the guideline development process
