Description

Research shows that PTSD and substance use disorders (SUDs) are very common co-occurring conditions, with each diagnosis increasing the risk for having the other. This comorbidity is associated with a number of complications, including worse treatment outcomes.

This course reviews the treatment research for concurrent PTSD and SUD, including future directions, and reviews the revised (2017) VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations for both PTSD and SUD. The authors describe how to use shared decision-making and other patient-centered strategies to promote engagement and retention in treatment. A number of resources and tools that can be used with patients are reviewed.

  • Describe the prevalence and correlates in concurrent PTSD and substance use disorders (SUD).
  • Examine current and future areas of treatment research.
  • Discuss clinical practice guideline recommendations for PTSD and SUD.
